GHANA ASSOCIATION OF PERSONS WITH ALBINIS MCELEBRATES 10 YEARS OF INTERNATIONAL ALBINISM AWARENESS DAY

On the occasion of the 10th International Albinism Awareness Day on June 13th, the Ghana Association of Persons with Albinism (GAPA) joins the international community in celebrating a decade of progress and collective action to promote the rights and welfare of persons with albinism and their family members.

Since its adoption by the United Nations General Assembly in 2014, International Albinism Awareness Day has become a powerful platform to raise global awareness about the unique challenges faced by persons with albinism, and to advocate for their full inclusion and participation in society.

Over the past 10 years, GAPA has played a key role in driving positive change for the albinism community in Ghana. The association has used the International Albinism Awareness Day as a platform to raise awareness and increase understanding on albinism as a disability, and participation of persons with albinism in society at all levels.

However, despite this progress, persons with albinism in Ghana and across Africa continue to face grave threats to their safety and well-being. Harmful practices including physical attacks for ritual purpose, discrimination, social stigma, and limited economic opportunities remain persistent challenges that require sustained action and commitment from all stakeholders.

As we commemorate this year’s International Albinism Awareness Day under the theme “10 years of IAAD: A decade of collective progress”, GAPA renews its call for all Ghanaians to join us in celebrating the dignity and contributions of persons with albinism, and to work collectively towards a more inclusive and equitable society where no one is left behind.

Together, we can build a Ghana where persons with albinism are empowered to reach their full potential and live with dignity, free from discrimination and fear.
