Launch of the Citizens’ Bureau at the Parliament of Ghana
The executive director of the Ghana Federation of Disability (GFD), Miss Rita Kusi Kyeremaa, attended the launch of the Citizens’ Bureau at the Parliament of Ghana on July 31st, 2023. The Bureau is a new institution which aims to promote dialogue and collaboration between the legislature, think tanks, civil society organisations (CSOs), and the media.
The Citizens’ Bureau will act as a platform for the exchange of research findings between CSOs/Think Tanks and lawmakers as well as for the dissemination of public information from parliament to CSOs Think tank organisations. Its main goal is to improve parliamentary functioning by effectively collaborating with CSOs/Think tank organisations.
GFD’s participation in the launch was crucial opportunity which will provide a forum for putting across issues the that disability movement wishes parliament to intervene relating to persons with disabilities and a further boost to our advocacy for the formalisation of the Parliamentary Caucus on Disability. The caucus is currently made up of committed lawmakers who have voluntarily come together to advance disability-inclusion agenda in Ghana’s legislative body.
The GFD deems the creation of the Citizens’ Bureau an important step in forging open and fruitful partnerships between parliament and civil society organisations (including organisations of persons with disabilities).
