National President of GFD visits the Gambaga “witches camp”
GAMBAGA, Ghana, 6th August 2024.
During a monitoring visit to the North-East region, a national team led by Mr. Joseph Atsu Homardzi, President of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD), made a significant stop at the Gambaga “Witches Camp” to engage with the inmates, particularly persons with disabilities.
The team interacted with a group of seven female inmates with disabilities, ranging in age from 20 to over 60 years old. Their disabilities varied, including physical, hearing, and intellectual impairments.
Other members of the monitoring team included Mr. Moses Fordjour, GFD’s M&E and Knowledge Manager, Mr. Mohamed Idirisu, North East GFD Regional President, and Mr. Baba, both the GSPD Regional President and the East Mamprusi Municipal GFD President.
Discussions were held with the inmates, their leaders, and caregivers to gain insight into their situation and living conditions.
In his address, Mr. Homardzi urged the GFD leadership in the East Mamprusi municipality to take a more active role in supporting their members at the camp. He emphasized the importance of advocating for a fair allocation of the District Assemblies Common Fund for Persons with Disabilities to ensure the inmates’ basic needs are met.
The GFD President expressed gratitude to the camp’s caregivers for their dedication in providing dignified living conditions for the inmates. He specifically acknowledged the efforts of Reverend Lariba from the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, who has been instrumental in assisting the camp residents.
As a gesture of support, Mr. Homardzi made a cash donation to the group, which was presented to the camp coordinator, Reverend Lariba.
